... of wringing out a bone-stock VQ35DE on the way back home. It's a little crude under 2000rpm, but a lot of 3.0+ 6-cylinder engines are a bit rough around the edges. Goosing it from 3500-5000rpm was far more enjoyable than I thought it to be. These motors were first introduced, what, more than 10 years ago? Weirdly, I actually liked it better than the more recent, more powerful VQ37VHR I've tried in the Infinitis. Why don't people talk about this motor more often? Am I missing something?

I drive a VQ35DE fairly often, it's an ok drive. Surprisingly good actually. Oh ya, this is in a Nissan Quest.

The good weird Quest from a few years back or the new less interesting one?

The VHR makes more power, but lost a lot of low-end torque in the process by running more aggressive cam profiles. Result: only fun for a short RPM range at the high end.

Both are pretty sweet motors though. Nissan has a habit of making a motor that stays powerful and cutting edge for 15-20 years after it is introduced.

First, yours is sideways. Second, it's been a great line of engines from the late 80s (VG30 with single & double cam, eventually twin turbos in the 300ZX), through the VG, VQ, and VR in the GTR. Tons of awards and race series wins, but like any V6 it's inherently unbalanced and doesn't have a great exhaust note, plus as a workhorse engine it's not unique so people like to moan about it.

I'd love to see the next Z with a DI version of it instead of a likely displacement downgrade. At 3.7 liters, adding DI would likely give it 350-360hp, 300lbs-ft, and 21/28.

Good weird one. It is a really nice van. Not kidding.

That it is; I tried it in a Maxima.

I want to try it in a new Z, but it's the same VHR as the Infinitis right? The torque is just not there at the bottom end.

Does the CVT get to be a hassle with a full load? I tried it in a Maxima, and I groaned at the CVT at first but the pull from the motor made the drive feel pretty good with three in the cabin and luggage in the trunk.

No CVT, just a regular automatic.

It doesn't matter because the gear selector sits on top of what best could be described as an oil barrel from OUTER SPACE!
